PS4 20th Anniversary Edition unit No. 00001 sold for £85K

UPDATE 18/02/2015: The mystery person behind the 15.135 million yen - or around £85,000 - winning bid for the PlayStation 4 20th Anniversary Edition charity auction failed to pony up.

Kotaku reports Sony will give the winning amount to Save the Children Japan, along with the other 15m yen it had promised.

ORIGINAL STORY 26/01/2015: Someone has bought the most coveted PlayStation 4 20th Anniversary Edition console for an eye-watering £85,000.

In December 2014 Sony sold 12,300 retro-themed PS4 units to coincide with the 20 year anniversary of PlayStation. Over the weekend Sony Japan held a charity auction on the No. 00001 unit. The Wall Street Journal reports it closed with a winning bid of ¥15.135 million - or around £85,000.

Sony sold PS4 Anniversary Edition consoles in the UK for £399.99.

"We appreciate all who participated in the auction and are surprised at the highest bid price, which was higher than our expectations," Sony's chief of understatement told WSJ.

Sony plans to contact the auction winner to arrange payment, which will be donated to Save the Children Japan. I doubt this one will end up on eBay.
