Papers, Please dev's marvellous nautical mystery Obra Dinn coming to consoles

Publish date: 2023-02-18

Return of the Obra Dinn, the "insurance adventure" from Papers, Please developer Lucas Pope, is making its way to Switch, Xbox One, and PS4 this autumn.

Described as "a first-person mystery adventure based on exploration and logical deduction", Obran Dinn - which initially launched on PC last year - sees players attempting to piece together the final moments of the merchant ship Obra Dinn, which, despite being declared lost at sea in 1803, mysteriously returns to port with no crew in sight four years later.

In the role of an East India Company insurance investigator, players are armed with a journal and compass (imbued with the power to rewind time and witness each crew member's final moments, naturally), and tasked with discerning and recording the fates of those onboard.

It's good stuff, and not just because of its marvellously distinctive "1-bit" art style. Eurogamer's Christian Donlan slapped Obra Dinn with an Essential badge in his review last year, calling it an "intricate and mesmerising puzzle game with a rich and detailed sense of place".

"As your clues mount up and the images in the book become less and less fuzzy, so the world comes into focus," he wrote, "You are not just exploring a place, you are slowly getting a sense for it. What an astonishing game. What an incredible piece of work."

And console players will finally be able to revel in the mystery of the Obra Dinn themselves when it arrives later this year.
