Animal Crossing Katrina and luck: How to get Katrina, Katrina's fortunes and luck in New Horizons explained

Publish date: 2023-05-02

Katrina, the fortune telling panther, has finally divined her way into Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

Katrina's fortunes have a direct effect on New Horizons' hidden luck mechanic, which, itself, has a subtle effect on your gameplay.

If your luck is good, then you may find yourself receiving more Bells from hitting the money rock, but, if your luck is bad, you may spend the whole day falling over.

Before you can start tempting fate though, you need to know how to get Katrina in New Horizons.

How to get Katrina in Animal Crossing: New Horizons

If you want to meet Katrina in New Horizons, then you need to unlock her vendor spot on Harv's Island.

To do this, you must first visit Harv's Island after downloading the Ver.2.0 patch to learn about his and Harriet's plan for the co-op.

Next, you will need to collect 100,000 Bells and donate it to the gyroid in the bottom left-hand corner of the field who is gathering funds for a mysteriously accurate fortune-teller.

If you've already unlocked a vendor or two - maybe even all of them - then someone may have already donated a small amount of Bells.

Once you've reached the donation goal, you'll have to wait for the next day for Katrina to arrive. After she's set up camp, however, you'll be able to visit her whenever you like to have your fortune read.

What does Katrina do in Animal Crossing: New Horizons?

Katrina offer three services in New Horizons, but, depending on your friendship levels with your villagers, one may not be available to you.

For 1,000 Bells each, Katrina can reveal your luck and the friendship level of a specific villager. Both of these services are only available once per day, so it may take you some time to uncover the friendship levels for all of your villagers.

After checking the your friendship level with a villager, she may also offer to bless you for 10,000 Bells. Doing so will boosts your friendship level with a villager and, to our knowledge, this option is only available if you're not currently best friends with this specific villager.

If Katrina says that you have the strongest of bonds with a villager, then you'll know you're already best friends.

What we know about luck and Katrina's fortunes in Animal Crossing: New Horizons explained

Luck is a hidden mechanic in the Animal Crossing series, which has a subtle effect on certain events every day in the game. Unlike past instalments in the series, luck was not originally included in New Horizons, but, with the Ver.2.0 patch, it has been included in a small way.

We don't, at the time of writing, know much about how luck works in New Horizons, but it does seem to only come into true effect once you've had Katrina read your fortune. So far, we've experienced fortunes which improved our luck with health and money.

After receiving an improved money fortune, the amount of Bells we earned from the money rock, golden digging spot and shaking trees was increased. The amount we earned from the golden digging spot, for example, was increased by 4,000 Bells - going from 1,000 to 5,000.

In the terms of bad luck, it's easy to assume the effects will be the opposite - you'll earn less Bells from the money rock and other activities for a bad money fortune, for example, and you may trip after receiving a bad health fortune.

Luck, in truth, isn't a very important mechanic in the world of Animal Crossing, but it is a nice addition which makes your island life feel a little more realistic. (As realistic as a game involving human-sized talking animals can be...)

Hope Katarina doesn't see anything too ominous in your future!
