How Summons and Summon locations work in Final Fantasy 7 Remake
To find Summon locations in Final Fantasy 7 Remake, you must complete specific Battle Intel Reports, progress through the story and find certain Materia in the environment.
For example, you'll be introduced to summons in Final Fantasy 7 Remake fairly early on in the adventure with Ifrit, which is unlocked naturally as part of the story. (No spoilers here!)
Once you've got your first Summon Materia, you can attune it by heading to the Materia and Equipment menu, tapping Triangle and navigating to the vacant slot on the far right of the Materia box. Here is where you'll attune Summon Materia to be used in battle.
Once it's slotted in, you should see the meter appear in battle after you've taken a lot of damage or sustained yourself through a long fight.
You should use a Summon when you're in a tough spot, as they will take your place and fight for you whilst you recover, dealing damage depending on their elemental affinities.
Once you commit to the summon by tapping the X button to open the Command Menu and navigating to the Summon tab, you'll watch a short animation before they arrive on the scene ready to wreak havoc.
Once your summon is on the field, you can command it using the Summon Ability tab which will replace the Summon tab once the deity is spawned. Here you can use chunks of your ATB meter to commit abilities that will be performed by the Summon in place of your own.
These deal massive damage, and you should take the time to read the descriptions on each ability to see how they can help you in battle. When the Summon's time is up, it will perform its ultimate attack and recede from battle, causing massive damage in its wake.
With that all explained, here's how to find all Summons in Final Fantasy 7 Remake...
How to get Chocobo Chick, Cactuar, Carbuncle Summons in Final Fantasy 7 Remake
The Chocobo Chick, Cactuar and Carbuncle Summons are available through pre-order bonuses or by purchasing the deluxe or digital deluxe versions of Final Fantasy 7 Remake.
How to get Ifrit in Final Fantasy 7 Remake
Ifrit's Summon Materia is given to Cloud as part of the game's campaign and doesn't require any special steps. No spoilers here, but get ready for it in the early chapters.
How to get Final Fantasy 7 Remake's Summon Materia behind the fan: How to get Chocobo and Moogle explained
You'll be introduced to this Materia in Chapter 6 as you're crossing past a ventilation shaft. You'll see the red Summon Materia on the ledge and the game will tease your ability to grab it, but you can't just yet.
Progress through the chapter until you've finished dealing with all three of the sun lamps, and you'll be taken to a cargo elevator to proceed down into the underbelly of the plate.
Before you do that, put the cargo elevator to your left-hand side and look ahead, you should see a lift that takes you across to another area. Hop on this lift and head over, climb the ladder and note the terminal.
This will unlock the door ahead, but the room is full of monsters and it will kick off a timer of one minute. Before you activate it, prepare your team with strong materia and perhaps even knock the difficulty down to Easy if you're worried.
Head in there and wipe the floor with the mobs, but don't get complacent, you need to head across the room to the other side and use the terminal to open the door and stop the timer. So as soon as the last mob is dead, rush over there and activate it to finish this side-quest.
This will stop the fans and let you access the Chocobo and Moogle Summon Materia.
How to get Shiva in Final Fantasy 7 Remake
You can unlock the Shiva Summon Materia by progressing through the game until you reach the first open-world area in the Slums of Sector 7.
Once the game tells you to join the Neighbourhood Watch, run around and find Chadley, a Shinra researcher who will offer you Battle Intel Report challenges. His placement is marked by a materia symbol next to a document.
Complete his first four challenges to unlock Combat Simulation: Shiva. This is a battle conducted in Virtual Reality against the deity Shiva, who is weak to Fire spells and attacks. Defeat Shiva in battle to unlock the Summon Materia.
How to get Fat Chocobo in Final Fantasy 7 Remake
Similar to the Shiva unlock method, to grab the Fat Chocobo Summon Materia you have to complete nine of Chadley's Battle Intel Report reports to unlock the virtual reality battle with the Fat Chocobo.
Once beaten, you'll be awarded the Summon Materia for your efforts and can use Fat Chocobo in battle.
How to get Leviathan in Final Fantasy 7 Remake
Complete five more of Chadley's Battle Intel Report challenges to unlock Combat Simulation: Leviathan and face off against the dreaded water demon in virtual reality.
Once you topple it, you'll get the Summon Materia to use in battle for yourself.
